Terraria Map Editor, TEdit, is a stand alone, open source map editor for Terraria. It lets you edit maps just like (almost) paint. There is an auto-backup feature that will backup worlds to *.wld.Tedit, but you should make your own backups.
It is an efficient and powerful tool designed to launch separate Terraria Mods.
